When someone shows you an animation, your first reflex is to say whether it is beautiful, fluid, of its time. That is the last criterion that counts. Motion design exists to make someone understand something, fast, and to push them to act. The rest is finishing. This guide does not give a textbook definition of motion design. It answers the questions you ask before committing a budget: what it is for, when it is the right tool, how to brief a studio, what makes the price vary, and how to know whether it worked.

Motion design, and what it is not

Motion design is the art of giving movement to graphic elements in order to convey an idea. Shapes, text, icons, data, an interface, a stylised character: everything that does not exist in front of a camera and that gets animated to make it clear. Its strength comes down to one word, and that word is not “aesthetic”. It is understanding. Motion design excels when you have to explain what cannot be filmed: an abstract service, a mechanism, a journey, a figure that only makes sense once set in motion.

What it is not deserves to be said just as clearly. A logo spinning on itself is not motion design, it is an effect. A cosmetic skin laid over a video to make it “more dynamic” is not either, it is decoration. And it is not filmed video dressed up: two crafts, two logics, two budgets. Confusing the three is the first reason an animation project disappoints. You paid for pretty, you were expecting useful.

The market, for its part, is not slowing down. According to Precedence Research, the global animation market was worth around 462 billion dollars in 2025 and is growing at 7.5% a year through to 2035 (verified on 15 June 2026). For a brand, the consequence is simple: animation has become an expected language, not a luxury. The real question is no longer “should we do some”, but “what for”.

Motion design or filmed video: the right tool for the right objective

The motion design versus video comparison comes up in every scoping session. It has no universal winner. It has a winner per objective.

Motion design takes the advantage as soon as the invisible has to be made visible.

Explaining a service or a mechanism that nothing can show on screen: a piece of software, a B2B offer, a procedure, a business model.

Turning data into a narrative: a report, a result, a before-and-after that only speaks once animated.

Adapting into several languages without reshooting a frame: you change the text and the voice, the visual stays, which matters for a brand addressing several markets.

Real filming takes the advantage elsewhere, and that has to be owned.

Providing proof through people: a client testimony, a face, an emotion no animated shape replaces.

Showing a place, a physical product, a real team: credibility comes through the concrete, filmed.

Most often, the right choice is neither one nor the other, it is both in the right order. A short animated intro that sets out the problem, a filmed testimony that provides the proof, an animated reminder that pushes to action. The format follows from the objective, never from fashion.

Three uses where motion design changes the result

The animated explainer, to clarify and convert

This is the most profitable use of motion design in business. An animated explainer of 60 to 120 seconds takes a confused offer and makes it obvious. The figures confirm the intuition. According to Wyzowl (Video Marketing Statistics 2026), 68% of video marketers have already produced an explainer, 96% of people have watched one to understand a product or a service, and 93% consider that video improves their audience’s understanding of their offer (verified on 15 June 2026). That last figure is the heart of the subject: motion design is not there to please, it is there to make people understand.

The best-known example is still Dropbox. An animated explainer of around two minutes, placed on an almost empty homepage, lifted conversions and sign-ups by roughly 10% according to the widely documented case (verified on 15 June 2026). The video boasted no technical feat. It answered a single question: why should I use this. That is exactly the job of a good explainer.

Campaign adaptation and social motion

The second use is volume. From one animated graphic universe, you adapt a series of short vertical formats for social networks, subtitled by default, designed to be watched without sound. It is the acquisition tool: cheap to produce once the animation charter is set, coherent from one format to the next, easy to translate. For a brand addressing several markets, it is the most economical way to speak three languages without tripling production. We cover the use of video on mobile in a dedicated guide to video marketing.

Animated brand identity

The third use belongs to systemic branding. An animation charter is the moving equivalent of a graphic charter: rules for how the logo appears, transitions, a rhythm specific to the brand, which make all its animated content recognisable. For a group steering its communication across several countries and several media, it is what makes a social video, a product explainer and a corporate film look as though they came from the same house. Not an aesthetic whim, coherence at scale.

How to brief a motion design project

Most failed projects are not badly animated. They are badly briefed. A style, a reference, a mood get described, and a result is expected. Yet motion design is not briefed by its appearance, but by its intention.

Before asking for a quote, write down three things. What this animation must achieve, in one concrete sentence: not “modernise our image” but “make our offer understood in under two minutes on a landing page”. Who it is made for, with their level of knowledge of the subject. And which languages it will be distributed in, because that changes everything, from the script to the edit.

The brief before the brief. The visual comes last. A serious motion design project starts with a script and a storyboard, not with a colour palette. If a studio talks to you about style before asking what the animation must achieve, it is selling a service, not an answer to your objective. The scenario carries most of the result. A magnificent animation that tells the story badly does not convert. A sober animation that tells it right does.

Choosing a motion design studio (or agency)

The term is confusing. A motion design studio often means an animation specialist, whereas an integrated motion design agency also carries the script, the strategy, the distribution and the multilingual adaptation around it. The right choice depends on your real need, not on the label.

Here are the criteria that really discriminate, beyond the portfolio.

The script before the visual. Ask to see their writing process. If there is none, move on.

Upstream scoping. A good supplier refuses to price an animation without having understood the business objective behind it. That is a sign, not a delay.

Native multilingual capacity. If you are distributing in several languages, insist on a review by someone who speaks the language. A machine-translated subtitle discredits a brand as surely as a mistake on a poster.

How it fits with the rest of your communication. An isolated animation has little value. An animation that fits your site, your social channels and your identity has a lot. That is the advantage of an integrated team rather than four suppliers.

Measurement. Ask how they will know, in three months, whether the animation served any purpose. If they have no answer, they deliver a file, not a result.

For the detail of the approach, see our guide on how to brief a communications agency.

What makes the price of a motion design vary

There is no catalogue price, and you should be wary when there is one. The cost depends on what goes into it. Four variables explain most of the gap between two quotes.

The length and the density of animation first: a minute dense with movement costs more than a sober minute. The technique next: 2D remains more accessible than 3D, which demands more skill and more rendering time. The number of languages in native quality: three languages is not content multiplied by three, but it is never free. And the share of upstream strategy: a studio that writes the script, scopes the objective and measures the result does not invoice like an executor animating a ready-made brief.

The order of investment matters as much as the amount. On a constrained budget, priority goes to the script and the storyboard, then to art direction and native subtitles, then to distribution, and only then to effects. One more effect has never saved an animation with no scenario.

Between what is sold and what is true. If your need comes down to a single animation, with no follow-up planned, do not set up a whole system. One well-written format will be enough, and we will tell you so. Motion design is an investment when it is part of something lasting, not a reflex expense because everyone else is doing it.

Measuring the result of a motion design

An animation that is not measured is an expense, not an investment. You do not measure an explainer like a brand film: the indicator is chosen with the objective.

Understanding: video completion rate, a fall in support questions or in objections during meetings. Reach: views past 50%, cost per view, sharing. Conversion: click-through rate, cost per lead, attributed sales, comparing the page with and without the animation. One indicator per objective is enough to steer without building a machine.

A word on generative AI, since the subject comes up at every table. It genuinely speeds up certain motion design tasks: variants, adaptations, first drafts. It does not decide why you are animating, nor what the animation must achieve. AI executes fast. It does not decide why. Strategy and script remain human work, and that is where the result is won or lost.

FAQ: motion design

What exactly is motion design? It is the animation of graphic elements (shapes, text, icons, data, stylised characters) to convey an idea and make it understandable. Its purpose is to explain, not to decorate. It is used above all for what cannot be filmed: a service, a mechanism, a journey, a figure.

Motion design or filmed video, which to choose? Motion design to explain the abstract, turn data into narrative and adapt into several languages without reshooting. Real filming for proof through people, testimony and the concrete place. Most often, the right set-up combines the two in the right order.

How long does a motion design project take? For a one to two minute explainer, expect a few weeks, with most of the time going to the script and the storyboard, not to the final render. A project dense in 3D or adapted into several languages stretches further. The timeline is scoped at the start, not afterwards.

How much does a motion design cost? The price depends on four things: the length and density of animation, 2D or 3D, the number of languages in native quality, and the share of strategy and script upstream. Be wary of a catalogue rate disconnected from your objective, and of a knock-down price that always catches up on the revisions.

Does an animated explainer really sell? Above all it makes people understand, and understanding precedes purchase. According to Wyzowl (2026), 93% of marketers consider that video improves understanding of their offer, and 96% of people have already watched an explainer to learn about a product (verified on 15 June 2026). No serious studio will guarantee you a number of sales: any quantified promise of that kind is a warning sign.

Do you need a specialist studio or an integrated agency? A specialist studio excels at pure animation. An integrated agency also carries the script, the distribution and the multilingual adaptation, and connects the animation with the rest of your communication. Choose according to your real need, not the label.

Will AI replace motion design? It speeds up production and adaptations, but it decides neither the objective nor the narrative. The value of a motion design lies in the script and the strategy, which remain human work. AI is one more tool in the chain, not a substitute for scoping.

Before you ask for a quote

A useful motion design is not chosen from a swatch of styles. It follows from an objective, an audience and a distribution channel. Ask the questions in that order: what must this animation achieve, for whom, and where will it be seen. Format, budget and technique follow. A deliverable is not a result.

In practice, we look together at your objective, your audience and your distribution constraints during a scoping session, and tell you frankly whether motion design is the right tool, or whether another format will serve you better.

Request a free quote

Motion design is not a moving skin.
