It earns you clicks. That is the distinction everyone misses, in one direction or the other: some ignore it believing it does nothing, others oversell it as a magic ranking lever. The truth is more useful. In 2025, John Mueller of Google repeated that structured data is not a direct ranking signal. But its effect on click-through is real: according to a BrightEdge study, pages with rich results get around 30% more clicks (checked on 15 June 2026). This guide explains what it is, what it genuinely changes, and which types to add first.

What structured data is

Structured data, or schema markup, is code added to a page to describe its content in a language Google understands without ambiguity: this is an article, this is an FAQ, this is a product at this price, this is a local business with these opening hours. That markup changes nothing of what the visitor sees on the page. It changes what Google can display in its results: review stars, expandable questions, prices, breadcrumbs, an image, opening hours.

Those enriched displays, the rich results, take up more room and catch the eye on the results page. That is where the extra clicks come from.

What it genuinely changes

Let us be clear, without overpromising. Structured data will not move you from page 3 to page 1: it does not act on ranking. What it does is make your result more visible and more appealing at the same position, which raises the share of people who click. On competitive subjects, that click-through gain is not trivial. And it takes on new importance now that search engines and AI assistants rely on this data to understand and restate content.

In other words, structured data does not replace good search work, it multiplies the return on it once the position is won.

Which types to add first

You do not mark up everything, you mark up what opens a rich display useful to your business.

FAQ on pages that answer questions: expands questions directly in Google.

Article on your blog content: date, author, image.

Local business if you have an address: hours, phone, map, in the side panel.

Product on a shop: price, availability, reviews.

Breadcrumb to clarify the site structure in the results.

The right choice follows from your type of content and the display you are aiming for, not from a wish to mark up everything. Incorrect or misleading markup can in fact be ignored, or even penalised.

The brief before the brief. Before having structured data added, ask which rich result it is aiming for and how you will check that it appears. Markup added without testing is dead code you believe is live. The right reflex is to validate each type with the Google testing tool before considering the work done.

Structured data and SEO

Structured data is the last layer of sound search work, not a shortcut. It assumes a technically readable site, covered in our guide to technical SEO, and pages that answer the intent, covered in our guide to on-page SEO. Laid on good foundations, it turns a position won into clicks gained.

FAQ: structured data

What is structured data? Markup added to a page to describe its content to Google (article, FAQ, product, local business). It changes nothing for the visitor, but it enables rich displays in the results.

Does structured data improve ranking? No, not directly. Google said so again in 2025 through John Mueller. It improves click-through via rich results: around 30% more clicks according to BrightEdge (checked on 15 June 2026).

Which structured data should I add first? The types that open a display useful to your business: FAQ and Article for a blog, Local business if you have an address, Product for a shop. Mark up what serves, not everything.

Can markup go wrong? Yes. Incorrect or misleading markup is ignored, or even penalised. Each type has to be validated with the Google testing tool before being considered live.

Is it useful for AI search? Increasingly. Search engines and AI assistants rely on this data to understand and restate content, which strengthens the case for clean markup.

Before you ask for a quote

Structured data is not a ranking lever but a click multiplier once the position is won. Add the types that open a useful display, validate them, and rest them on sound technical and on-page work. It is the layer that makes the rest shine, not a shortcut.

The first step is identifying the rich results that matter for your business, adding the corresponding markup, and validating it with the Google testing tool.

Request a free quote

Structured data will not lift your ranking.
