Unlike backlinks, which depend on others, or the technical side, which is infrastructure, on-page optimisation depends only on you. It is also the most rewarding place to start, precisely because it is entirely in your hands. This guide sets out the levers that genuinely count, in order, to answer a search intent better than the pages you compete with.

It all starts with search intent

Before optimising anything, you have to understand what the person typing your keyword is actually after. Do they want to understand, compare, buy, find a provider? A page that misses the intent will not rank, however neatly optimised its markup, because it does not give the searcher what they came for. The best way to read intent is to look at what Google already ranks at the top for that keyword: the dominant form, guide, comparison or service page, tells you what the algorithm considers relevant.

On-page optimisation therefore starts with that question, not with keyword density.

The on-page levers, in order

The title tag. The most visible on-page factor: it is the clickable headline in Google. It carries the main keyword, stays readable, and gives people a reason to click. A good title tag earns you both ranking and clicks.

The meta description. Not a direct ranking factor, but it decides part of your clicks. A clear description that promises the answer brings the visitor in.

The heading structure. One H1 that states the subject, H2s that break it up logically. Structure helps both reader and engine grasp how the page is organised.

Content that answers better. Not the longest, the most useful: the one that answers the intent more fully and more clearly than the competing pages.

Internal links. Links to your related pages on the same subject, which pass authority and help Google understand your themes.

These levers reinforce one another. A page that ticks them answers the intent, reads quickly, and earns the click.

Content: useful before long

Keyword density is an old reflex to forget. Google assesses relevance, not repetition. A page that covers the real questions on a subject, in plain language, with concrete examples, beats a page stuffed with keywords. The aim is not to please an algorithm but to answer a person, which is exactly what the algorithm sets out to reward.

The brief before the brief. Before optimising a page, look at what Google already ranks first for your keyword. If those are detailed guides and you have a three-line page, the problem is not your tags, it is your answer to the intent. You cannot dress up a page that answers the wrong question.

On-page, technical and structured data

On-page SEO does not work alone. It rests on a technically sound site, covered in our guide to technical SEO, and it extends into structured data, which makes the page eligible for rich results. The three form a set: the technical side makes it readable, on-page makes it relevant, structured data makes it visible.

FAQ: on-page SEO

What is on-page SEO? Optimising everything that sits on the page: intent, title, meta, structure, content, internal links. It is the part of search you control entirely.

Which on-page lever matters most? Answering the right search intent, then the title tag. A page that misses the intent will not rank, whatever the quality of its markup.

Should I repeat the keyword everywhere? No. Keyword density is an old reflex, useless and sometimes harmful. Google assesses relevance and usefulness, not repetition.

On-page or technical SEO, which comes first? The technical side has to be sound for on-page to pay off. But on-page is the most rewarding thing to work on next, because it depends only on you, unlike backlinks.

Does the meta description affect ranking? Not directly, but it decides part of your clicks. A clear description that promises the answer improves the click-through rate, and that counts.

Before you ask for a quote

On-page SEO is the lever most within your reach: it depends only on the quality of your pages. Start from the search intent, work on the title, structure the page, answer better than the others, link internally. The rest of search complements this work, it does not replace it.

In practice, we analyse the intent behind your target keywords, audit your existing pages, and optimise them to answer better than the pages already ranking.

Request a free quote

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself.
